In order to better serve our patients, doctors and other medical professionals are constantly seeking to learn new skills, techniques, and procedures. That is why events like the Chicago Sports Medicine Symposium are so crucial for furthering the fields of elbow surgery and shoulder surgery — especially for treating athletes. This symposium provided an incredible opportunity for experts to learn about the latest devices and procedures in sports medicine. Read on to learn more about the event and what was learned there, as well as Dr. Anthony Romeo’s participation in the symposium as an expert in the field.
Recognize, Treat, and Manage
Co-directed by Dr. Anthony Romeo and Dr. Nikhil Verma, the two-day event emphasized the recognition, treatment, and management of sports-related injuries. In attendance were surgeons, doctors, nurses, athletic trainers, and physical therapists, and the event provided an opportunity for these professionals to come together, share their knowledge, and acquire more information. This was done through workshops and live broadcasts, as well as case presentations and panel discussions. Specific injuries that were focused on included:
- Complex glenohumeral instability
- Rotator cuff tears
- Complex knee ligament injuries
- Femoral acetabular impingement and labral tears of the hip
- Various sport-related elbow injuries, such as tennis elbow
Some of these injuries were focused in the context of learning to manage them, whereas others were simply emphasized as issues to recognize. Current rehabilitation programs and return-to-play procedures were also covered.
